Barking up the wrong tree
Significado: Pursuing the wrong course of action; making a false assumption about something.
Used when someone is looking in the wrong place, accusing the wrong person, or following a bad lead. It's a polite but firm way to tell someone they're mistaken. Very common in American English for both serious and casual situations.
