You know
Meaning: A filler phrase used to check for understanding, add emphasis, or simply while gathering thoughts.
'You know' is one of the most common American verbal fillers. It can seek agreement ('It's tough, you know?'), add emphasis ('He's, you know, really talented'), or simply fill space while the speaker thinks. While technically asking 'do you know?', it rarely expects an answer. It creates a sense of shared understanding.
Examples
- It's just, you know, one of those days where nothing goes right. Es solo, ya sabes, uno de esos días en los que nada sale bien.「ほら、なんていうか、何もうまくいかない日ってあるじゃない。」
- I want to travel more, you know? See the world. Quiero viajar más, ¿sabes?
- He's not a bad guy, you know — he's just going through a rough time. No es mala persona, ¿sabes? — solo está pasando por un momento difícil.「彼は悪い人じゃないんだよ、ほら——ただ辛い時期を過ごしてるだけで。」
