Take the scenic route
Meaning: To choose a longer but more beautiful road, or to take an unnecessarily long time doing something.
Taking the scenic route can be literal — choosing back roads over the highway to enjoy the countryside — or a gentle way of saying someone is lost or taking too long. It's sometimes used sarcastically when the driver is clearly going the wrong way but won't admit it.
