Study abroad
Meaning: A college program where students spend a semester or year studying at a foreign university.
Study abroad is considered the transformative college experience. 'I studied abroad in Florence' or 'my semester in Barcelona' are statements that carry social capital. Study abroad combines education, travel, cultural immersion, and personal growth. Students return with new perspectives (and usually an accent they picked up). It is also expensive and not equally accessible to all students. 'Study abroad changed me' is both sincere and a cliché. Europe is the most popular destination.
