Side quest
Meaning: An unexpected adventure, detour, or spontaneous activity that wasn't part of the original plan.
Borrowed from video game terminology, a side quest in real life is any unplanned adventure or tangent. Going to Target for one thing and ending up exploring for an hour? Side quest. Meeting a random person at a bar who tells you their life story? Side quest. It frames life as a game where the detours are just as valuable as the main story.
