Portage
Meaning: Carrying a canoe or kayak overland between two bodies of water.
A portage is one of the most physically demanding parts of canoe tripping — you literally carry your boat (and all your gear) over land to get from one lake or river to another. 'How long is the portage?' determines whether a route is manageable. Boundary Waters Canoe Area (Minnesota) is famous for portage-heavy routes. A tough portage can be hundreds of meters through muddy, root-covered terrain with a 70-pound canoe on your shoulders.
