The interstate
Meaning: A major highway that is part of the Interstate Highway System, connecting cities across state lines.
When Americans say 'take the interstate,' they mean a specific federal highway (I-95, I-10, I-405, etc.). The Interstate Highway System is one of the largest public works projects in history, spanning nearly 50,000 miles. Odd-numbered interstates run north-south, even-numbered run east-west — a fact most Americans don't know.
Examples
- Take the interstate — it's faster than back roads.
- I-95 runs from Maine all the way down to Miami.
- There's a huge pileup on the interstate this morning.
