Origin & History

From golf, where a hole in one (also called an 'ace') is one of the rarest achievements in sport — the odds for an amateur are roughly 12,500 to 1. The first recorded hole in one was by Tom Morris Jr. in 1868 at the Open Championship. By the mid-20th century, the phrase had entered general American English as a metaphor for nailing something perfectly on the first attempt.
