Hoagie
Meaning: A large submarine sandwich — the Philadelphia term for a sub.
In Philadelphia and surrounding areas, you don't order a 'sub' — you order a 'hoagie.' It's the same sandwich, but the name is a point of local pride. A classic Philly hoagie is Italian — salami, ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onions, and oil. The hoagie is so important to Philadelphia culture it was named the city's official sandwich.
