Meaning: To prepare for war or conflict; to hide out and prepare for battle.
From Italian-American Mafia culture where during gang wars, soldiers would hide in safe houses with mattresses on the floor, ready for combat. Popularized by The Godfather (1972). Now used humorously for any competitive battle.
