College town
Meaning: A small city or town whose economy and culture are dominated by a university.
College towns are built around and for their university. Ann Arbor, Chapel Hill, Madison, Boulder, Austin — the university is the town. Restaurants, bars, bookstores, and apartments all cater to students. College towns have a specific energy: young, intellectual, progressive, and buzzing during the school year but eerily quiet during summer break. 'I love college towns' means you like the vibe of a place where the average age is 22 and there is always something happening.

Origin & History
The concept dates to the Morrill Land-Grant Acts of 1862 and 1890, which created state universities in small towns across America. Towns like Ann Arbor (U of Michigan, 1817), Madison (U of Wisconsin, 1848), and Chapel Hill (UNC, 1795) became defined by their institutions. The term 'college town' entered common American English by the early 1900s, and the 'town-gown' dynamic — tension and symbiosis between locals and the university — has been studied by sociologists since the mid-20th century.
