Chain of command
Meaning: The hierarchical structure of authority from top to bottom.
The official line of authority in a military or organizational structure. Breaking the chain of command — going over your boss's head — is a serious offense in the military and frowned upon in many workplaces. Used broadly to describe any hierarchy.
