Car camping
Meaning: Camping at a drive-up campsite where you can park your car next to your tent.
Car camping is the most accessible and popular form of camping. You drive to a campsite, park next to your tent, and unload coolers, camp chairs, and all the gear you want because weight does not matter. It is the opposite of backpacking. 'We are just car camping' often comes with a slight apology to hardcore outdoors people, but car camping is wonderful — campfires, s'mores, cold beer from the cooler. Most Americans' first camping experience is car camping.
Examples
- We are just car camping this weekend — nothing fancy, just the state park.
- Car camping is great because you can bring everything including the kitchen sink.
- I prefer car camping over backpacking — I like having a cooler full of beer.

Origin & History
Auto-camping emerged in the 1920s-30s as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone popularized recreational car travel. The term 'car camping' crystallized in the 1960s-70s to distinguish drive-up campsite camping from backpacking, which gained its own identity through the Sierra Club and lightweight gear movement. The National Park Service and state park systems built thousands of drive-in campsites during this era, making car camping the default American outdoor experience.
